Interstate Mechanical Contractors, Inc. (IMC) was founded in 1982 by the late Daniel R. Burnette and his wife Judy.   While enjoying a successful career with his father’s company, the Ben A. Burnette Co., Mr. Burnette seeked to explore new opportunities which were simply not available for a union contractor aspiring to expand into the Knoxville market.  Therefore IMC was established as an open shop mechanical contracting business that would compliment and mirror the success of the union shop specialty contracting business that was established with the Ben A. Burnette Company. 

Interstate opened its doors with only five employees and produced sales of less than one million dollars in its first year of operation.  Interstate was initially housed in an office trailer located on Dutch Valley Road in north Knoxville, and has grown steadily throughout its history and today supports the families of its 120+ employees with average annual sales of more than $24 million dollars in recent years.  Interstate celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2007 with record sales of over $26 million along with record profits for the year.

IMC presently resides in its recently renovated Leed™ Certified office complex located on a six acre tract on Henson Road centrally located in the Knoxville market.   Since Mr. Burnette’s passing in February 2001 and completion of the succession plan with the sale of the business in January 2003,  IMC is now owned and fully operated by IMC’s President, Terry L. Self and his wife Robin.
